Who we are

The University of Nairobi (UoN) is the oldest and the largest university in Kenya. Founded in July 1970 as the first public and national university, the UoN has continued to provide quality university education, research and training, as stated in its mission and mandate. The University’s mission is  to embody the aspirations of the Kenyan people and the global community through the creation, preservation, integration, transmission and utilization of knowledge. Like many other universities across the globe, achieving a vision and sustaining a mission requires strengthening the bedrock of an institutions operations. It also requires continued learning from, and monitoring of the broader environmental context to improve interventions in pursuance of the vision.

The UoN Foundation thus is  non-political and shall have no affiliation to political groups. It aims to tap from the philanthropy potential of the higher education sector and to institutionalize the sustainability of the UoN. The University of Nairobi is a premier institution of higher learning in the region, it shares in the nations greater mandate of achieving the “Sustainable Development Goals” through providing trained man power. The economic potential of Kenya and Africa is huge and can only be achieved through cohorts of trained manpower. This explains the recharged vitality in the Higher Education sector, and the ongoing discourse of “Thinking higher education and beyond” by UNESCO, whose aim is to trigger thinking on higher education’s contribution to future societal needs up to 2050
