Prof. Julia Ojiambo is the immediate former Chairperson of the University of Nairobi Council. She has vast leadership experience in teaching, legislation and advocacy, governance and policy development.

Having been the first African female student at the Royal Technical College, currently known as University of Nairobi, first Kenyan woman to enroll to Harvard and first woman to graduate with a PhD in Kenya.

Prof Ojiambo holds a Diploma in Home Economics (UoN), Bachelor’s Degree in Community Health (London), Master’s Degree in Public Health (Havard) and a PhD from UoN jointly with McGill University. Julia embarked on a career in academia as a lecturer at UoN and later Kenyatta University.

In 1974 she started her political career where she won the Busia Central Parliamentary seat. She later went on to be appointed on various ministries as an Assistant Minister.

Her national honors include; Chief of the Order of Burning Spear (CBS) in 2018, Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS) in  2016 and Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS) in 2003.
